Researchers have developed ArguLens, an open-source system for automated essay scoring and providing label-aware feedback. The system breaks down the task into three components: a discourse-move classifier, a grade-independent scorer, and a feedback generator. These components can be deployed locally without relying on closed APIs, which reduces data privacy and cost concerns.
